Case Information

OPEN OUTCRY CASE:

The social outcry was an icebreaker event held on the first evening that allowed sponsors, students, faculty and staff to participate in an index futures trading case. Participants received qualitative news releases and anticipated changes in the market index and trade futures with each other in order to profit from fluctuations.

SALES & TRADER CASE:

This was the premier electronic trading case on the Rotman Interactive Trader platform. With five different trading scenarios, this simulated market environment put critical thinking and analytical skills to the test. Whether participants chose to be market makers, trade institutional orders, or a combination of the two, they had to think fast and logically in order to manage liquidity risk and get the highest return.

COMMODITIES TRADING CASE:

The Commodities case challenged competitors to interact with one another in a closed supply and demand market which involved crude oil production, refinement, storage, as well as its physical byproducts and their derivatives. The case tested each participant’s ability to assess complicated market dynamics and optimally perform their individual role, while stressing teamwork and communication sharing amongst them.

ALGORITHMIC TRADING CASE:

The Algorithmic Trading case was designed to challenge competitors’ logic and programming skills as they attempt to design the most effective algorithm to generate trading profits. Competitors lacking knowledge in programming followed step-by-step guides and used trading templates to design their algorithm, while more ambitious traders designed algorithms from the ground up.

ELECTRICITY TRADING:

The Electricity Case challenges the ability of the participants to interact with one another in a closed supply and demand market for electricity. Electricity production and its consumption will form the framework for participants to engage in direct trade to meet each other’s objectives. The case will test each individual’s ability to understand sophisticated market dynamics and optimally perform his/her role, while stressing teamwork and communication.
